Brain Injuries & Memory Impairment

If you ask the average person what conditions frighten them the most, brain injury and memory impairment are usual at the top of the list. Why? Because we realize our ability to remember our loved ones, remember experiences shared with them, our ability to think and formulate ideas, our ability to see and appreciate sunsets, smell and enjoy flowers and hear and enjoy beautiful music are all things we experience through our brain and nervous system.

Unfortunately, proper brain care is neither taught nor practiced in conventional or alternative medicine. In both branches of healthcare, it seems to be a “neck-down” approach, despite the fact that the brain is one of the most fragile organs, and very susceptible to trauma, toxins, poor diet and stress.

Whether you have had some kind of head trauma, you are dealing with memory impairment, or just want to optimize brain function and reduce the impact of aging, we can help.

Some of the tools we use to facilitate Brain & Memory repair, include:

  • Laser Therapy - Low Level Laser or Cold Laser.
  • Our signature Brain Balancing exercises.
  • Eye Lights – special glasses with LED lights, programmed to stimulate specific parts of the brain.
  • Exercise with Oxygen Therapy (EWOT).
  • Applied Neurology and Functional Movement Screening.
  • Personalized Diet and Nutrition Plan – designed to speed brain healing and recovery.
  • GenoMind testing – identifies genetic variations which influence pathways critical to brain health.

This allows us to look deep into the personalized risk factors which may influence your circadian rhythms, sleep, tissue regeneration, neuroplasticity, mood and memory – all relating back to your ability to heal your brain.

Brain Function & Movement

Optimizing brain function and movement is vital to how we perceive and respond to our environment.

The health of the brain dictates everything about you – your personality, how much you enjoy life, how you think, how you feel, and how well you get along with other people.

Your brain is one of the most metabolically demanding organs in your body, and it requires 3 things in order to function properly: Oxygen, Glucose and Movement.

Oxygen - without a constant supply of oxygenated blood, your brain cannot function properly and begins to shut down.

Glucose - your brain requires just the right amount of blood sugar (glucose) to feed its high metabolic demands. Too much glucose and it forms advanced glycation end products (AGEs) which have been linked to diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline. Too little glucose (hypoglycemia) and you feel very lethargic and can’t concentrate.

Movement - your brain requires constant feedback and stimulation in the form of movement. Without constant feedback from all your muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc., your brain literally starts to shrink! That’s right, the more you sit, the smaller your grey matter gets. The good news - it grows when you move, dance and learn new things.

Movement is the kinetic energy that drives the brain, helping to create the electrical and chemical signals it uses for all communication.

The structural integrity and movement of the body is of vital importance in brain health. Mechanoreceptor in the joints and soft tissues, particularly those of the spine and the TMJ, allow the brain to orientate itself in space.

Brain and Memory care in our office always involves a thorough evaluation of your central nervous system, and a plan to improve its ability to orient you to gravity and your surroundings. We utilize specific brain balancing exercises and protocols to improve brain function, and to improve how certain areas of the brain fire to, and coordinates with the rest of the brain including the cortex and brainstem.

Diet
Avoid foods that increase inflammation such as sugar, processed foods, refined oils, refined carbohydrates, conventional dairy products and conventional meats. When choosing animal proteins, always go for the healthiest options including grass fed beef, pasture-raised eggs, hormone and antibiotic-free poultry and wild fish.

Consumption of greens like spinach, kale, collard green, arugula and watercress, as well as cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower help with hormone metabolism, and provide large amounts of phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals necessary for brain health and recovery.

Supplements
Anyone with a brain injury or memory problems would benefit from taking the following nutrients:

  • A high quality fish oil
  • Probiotics
  • Digestive enzymes
  • High quality methylated B vitamins
  • Turmeric or Curcumin – needs to be high quality and readily absorbable form
  • Vitamin D3 in correct proportion to vit. A and K2.
  • Vitamin C, NAC, glutathione, resveratrol, the amino acid glutamine, iodine and several others can also be quite helpful.

Brain problems can be scary and you are not alone. Here at The Center For Functional Medicine, we are here to serve you every step of the way.
